Tea Dance: St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre invite you to their St Patrick’s Celebration Tea Dance. This will take place on Friday 20 March, 1-4 pm, Admission €5. There will be tea, sandwiches and tray-bakes on arrival followed by music and dancing. Please come along and enjoy the craic!

Maths for Adults: This course is designed for parents who would like to brush up on their maths skills to enable them to support their children with maths homework. The course will be delivered in a family-friendly user approach and the content will be led by the group needs. Contact the Resource Centre office at (074) 91 48551.

Saturday Walk: The next Saturday walk will be this Saturday 7th March. The venue will be Glenveagh National Park, ‘Bridle Path’. A bus will leave the centre at 8.30 am. We will return at approximately 3.30pm. To book a place contact the Resource Centre on 9148551. People from outside the area are welcome to come along. €5 per participant. There will be an opportunity to eat out after the walk. A shorter walk is available if you wish as all speeds will be catered for.

Women’s Group: Our group meets on the first Thursday of every month in the Centre. Times are 7.30 to 10 pm. This group offers interesting presentations and good company. Come along and maybe bring a friend!

Crosses: Joe Bovaird wishes to thank those who gave donations for St Brigid’s Crosses for the Good and New Cancer Bus. The number of crosses made was 1,300. Total amount raised €4,030.

Whist Drive: The next Whist drive will take place on Monday, March 30th at 8 pm in the Centre. €5 per person. A light supper will be provided. New members will be made very welcome.

Lunch Club: The next Lunch Club will be on Wednesday 11 March 2015. Are you fifty or over? Are you at a loose end? Would you like to meet and socialise with people of your own age group for lunch, a chat, a bit of craic, enjoy occasional outings, social events, information events and meeting new people? If you are interested, join us at the Lunch Club in St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre every second Wednesday from 11am-1.00pm. New members always welcome and why not bring a friend or two! Transport can be provided. For more information contact the centre staff at 074-9148551.

DVD: A DVD can be purchased in the Resource Centre for €15 a copy. Proceeds are in aid of the local conference of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. Johnny Haughey and Fergus Cleary, two SVP members, have produced this DVD to raise funds here in Donegal. Artists such as Daniel O'Donnell, Margo and Conal Gallen and many more have given their time free of charge so that all proceeds will go to the charity.

Bowling: Bowling meets Mondays and Fridays in the Centre from 7.30 to 10.30 pm. €2 per night. Everyone is welcome.

Courses: Courses coming up soon: Personal Development for young adults, Boat Building, Microsoft Publisher, Knitting and Crochet, for more information or to book a place contact the Resource Centre office at (074) 91 48551. These courses are funded by Donegal ETB Community Education Programme.

Playgroup: Stepping Stones Playgroup is holding its enrolment day on Monday 9th March from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm. Your child must be 2 years and 10 months and toilet trained. We run the ECCE scheme (the free place programme). Please bring your child's PPS number, immunisation records, birth certificate. Mary or Nuala can be contacted on (074) 91 48512/ 085 8057911.

5k: Couch to 5k will be starting on Wednesday 18th March at 7pm assembling at the Resource Centre. Couch to 5K is a challenging and effective fitness programme for all fitness levels working towards building healthy and comfortable fitness levels and the ultimate goal of being able to participate in a 5k. 50/50 Bonus Ball: The 50/50 Bonus Ball Fundraiser for the Resource Centre runs weekly. There are only 45 numbers on the sheet. They are sold at €1 each. If your number is picked as the Bonus Ball on Saturday’s National Lotto, you get half the money that came in that week. The other half goes to the centre. Congratulations to winner Ciara McIntyre who won recently on number 23 on Friday 28 February! If you would like to buy a line, call to reception at the centre.



Easter Hamper: There is a fantastic Easter Hamper that can be viewed at reception in the Resource Centre. Raffle lines are €2. Why not buy a line and you might win the hamper? The raffle will take place on Thursday 2 April 2015.



Fire Safety: There is an excellent publication on Fire Safety in the Home available near the book shelf at reception in the Resource Centre. This free publication outlines tips for staying safe in the home when there is the chance of a fire. There is an extremely helpful checklist in the publication. Please pick up one.

Slim R Us: Slim R Us every Thursday 10.30- 11.30 am in the Resource Centre. New members are very welcome. Slim R Us is all about trying to lose weight in a healthy and balanced way. Film Night: There was great local interest in Monreagh Ulster Scots Heritage and Education Centre’s recent film night when we watched the screening of Flax, the Forgotten Harvest. The Monreagh Centre is hoping to collect as much information as possible about the flax industry in Donegal. We would appreciate your help. If you, or anyone you know, have worked in the flax industry in Donegal, please let us know. We're hoping to compile a book of facts and memories about the flax industry of Donegal. It is important to do this for in a few decades nobody will know anybody who was involved in the industry. Please call 9140708.

Genealogy: “My grandmother Matilda Loughrey was born in or around the Argony Pipe Newtowncunningham. I am not clear about the area and its divisions. Her father’s name was William and they were in Derry in 1904 when she married my grandfather James Hegarty. Taughboyne History: Taughboyne History Group is anxious to source any old photos of the local schools, which Patrick is willing to scan and return the originals to their owners. It is hoped at some point we can invite a specialist to make a presentation on local maps which may help with our research into local placenames. Our next meeting will be Wednesday 11th March 7.30 pm. New members and inquirers are welcome.

Baby Massage: Five weekly baby massage sessions starting Friday 12th June 10.30 – 12pm in St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre. Baby Massage is a wonderful holistic way to connect with your baby through the sense of touch providing quality time to experience and enjoy your baby’s reaction to the simple touch techniques. The baby massage is facilitated by Noeleen Mc Ateer an experienced practitioner who will ensure the experience is enjoyable and memorable for both parent and baby. Mums, dads, grandparents and guardians are all welcome. This programme is funded and supported through the Catherine Howard Foundation and Donegal Family Resource Centres. Anniversary: Monsignor Dan Carr our Parish Priest will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood. To mark this special event, the parishioners of St Baithin’s Church are organising a celebration event this Friday 12 June 2015 at 6pm with Mass in St Baithin’s Church followed by a reception in St Johnston and Carrigans FRC.
Saturday Walk: The next Saturday walk will be ‘Inishowen Head Walk’ on 27th June 2015. The bus will leave St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre at 9am and return at approximately 5pm. This walk is open to all members of the community. All under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult. Cost €7 per person. Walkers please bring and wear appropriate clothes, pack a snack and bring money for a bite to eat on the way home. Walking Churches: St Baithins Church and Ballylennon Church invite you to join them for their 6K Fundraising Walk on Saturday 20th June. Leaving from 2 to 3pm. Proceeds will go to St Johnston and Carrigans Social Services Fund. Subscription will be €5 which includes Hi-viz jacket, refreshments en route and tea at the finish in Ballylennon Church Hall. Transport will be provided for return journey if desired. Walk will start from St Baithin’s Church car park and finish at Ballylennon Church Hall.
Taughboyne History Group has ended for the summer and will resume in September. The group has recognised how the harnessing of the river from Ardagh is an important historical feature and we hope to learn more about it in the future. It could be an opportunity for us to record the various water wheels and mills along its course. If you can help please email taughboynehistorygroup@gmail.com.

Fresh Produce: An exciting new project for 17 years and up is coming up. Fresh Produce is series of workshops which will be facilitated by Darren McGlynn to enable young people from the area to engage with contemporary visual art and making.
Three sessions, spread between St. Johnston and VOID, will explore some techniques used for designing and making your own apparel and posters. We will be exploring the design process from initial drawings and concepts right through to producing finished t-shirts, tote bags and posters. Throughout the workshops Darran will reference historic and contemporary art and design and present examples from his own work and the work of others for reference. Direction and tuition will be provided throughout the workshops across a range of mediums including drawing, painting and accidental mark making, digital design, screen-printing and photography. Alongside this, a compilation of instructions and tutorials from throughout the workshops will be presented to the group to enable further study. Community Employment vacancies: St Johnston and Carrigans Community Employment Project supported by the Department of Social Protection is currently recruiting a Youth Activity Worker to cover maternity leave. The position is based in St. Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre. Workers and offers 19.5 hours supported employment and training opportunities. Eligible criteria applies. Table Quiz: There will be a Table Quiz for Trinity Court Interchurch. It will take place in Maggies Tavern, Carrickmore, St Johnston at 9 pm this Friday 12 June. Tables of 4 and it will be €5 per participant. There will be a raffle with great prizes.

Whist Drive: The June Whist drive will take place on Monday, June 29 at 8 pm in the Centre. A light supper will be provided. New players always welcome. €5 to participate.

Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps. Naomh Colmcille GAA Club is hosting the Kellogg’s GAA Cul Camp at Pairc Colmcille Newtoncunningham from the 6th—10th of July for all children aged 6 to 13 years. Camp starts each day at 10am and finishes at 2.30pm. Children are asked to bring a packed lunch and to dress appropriately for the weather. There will be a tuck shop each day at camp. Each child will receive a Jersey, training top and a backpack in county colours. Cost is €55 for the first child, €45 for the second child and €40 for each child thereafter. Dunmore: The Gardens at Dunmore House, Carrigans, will be open on Sunday 14 June 2015 from 3.00 pm by kind permission of Sir John and Lady McFarland. Teas and entertainment will be available. Proceeds will be for Killea Parish Church, Carrigans.

The organisers of Walking Churches, the recent 6km walk from St. Baithin’s Chapel to Ballylennon would like to thank everyone who was involved. The total raised for Carrigans & St. Johnston Social Services was €510. A special word of thanks to Garvan & Tanya Keys, and Eddie Shields for helping with refreshments and those who made afternoon tea in Ballylennon.

Members of Ballylennon Church would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone who helped them with The Story of Ford on Saturday night last. The display of vintage tractors to present day was tremendous and all supplied by local people. Everyone was able to enjoy a barbecue and walk around the tractors. The show added greatly to the presentation of the history of Henry Ford by Mr. George Conn from Lisburn. This proved to be a very enjoyable evening and illustrates what can be done with the help of the local community.

Charity Walk: The Fourth Annual Binnion Mass Rock Walk was previously postponed due to the adverse weather conditions. Apologies for any disappointment or inconvenience caused. The good news is that the Walk has been scheduled for this Sunday, 16 August. The Walk departs Maggies Tavern, Carrickmore, at 3 pm. The registration fee is €5 followed by BBQ and music will take place at Maggies. Proceeds are in aid of Ballyduff Community Group Home, Lifford. The walk is approximately 4k. All are welcome.

First Aid: A Paediatric First Aid for Parents course is up and coming in the Resource Centre. This is an accredited first-aid course. Please ensure you are available for both evenings. Dates are Tuesday September 15 and Tuesday 22. Times from 7-10 pm. Cost €20 per participant. Limited places available so in order to avoid disappointment please contact the centre as soon as possible to book. A €10 deposit will secure your place.

Acrylic Painting: There will be an acrylic painting art class for beginners and improvers. It starts Monday 7 September in Old Playgroup, Church Lane, St Johnston. 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Advice Clinic: A Garda Information and Advice Clinic will be held in St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre on Tuesday September 1, from 7-8 pm. This service aims to provide access to Garda services in the St Johnston and Carrigans are through a regular monthly clinic in the centre. An officer from the Garda services will be present in the centre to meet with people on a confidential one to one basis for the purposes of providing services such as passport applications, provide information and advice and to deal with public concerns/issues.

RES: Regional Employment Outreach Service will be in St Johnston and Carrigans FRC on Tuesday 1 September from 11am – 1pm. Are you unemployed, seeking work, training or education opportunities? The RES offers a free and totally confidential service that provides support with putting together a professional CV, filling out job application forms, preparing for an interview and providing access to emerging job opportunities. It details the advantages of taking up employment.

Carrigans: I recently got information about John McElhinney’s shop in Carrigans. He owned a butchers shop in Carrigans in the 1940's. His wife’s name was Sarah. It would be great if somebody had further information on this business, where it was located and any photographs would be great.

Dementia Training: Are you providing care to a parent, son, daughter, relative, friend or neighbour suffering from dementia? Lagan Primary Care Team will host Dementia Training on Tuesday 8 September 9.45 to 4 pm in St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre. The programme will run all day and it aims to inform about the condition and gives an opportunity for people to meet others. Lunch will be provided. Teen Club: St Johnston and Carrigans FRC Teen Club for First, Second and Third year Secondary School students. Starts Thursday 17 September 6.30 to 7.30 pm. Lunch Club: will restart on Wednesday 9th September at 11am. If you are over 50 and at a loose end come along and have a bite of lunch with bingo a bit of craic. New members always welcome. Due to a cancellation a place has become available on the Westport Trip. Westport, Co Mayo. The trip will depart 10am Tuesday 29 September returning 5 pm Friday 2 October. New Activities for kids; Stretch & Grow for junior, senior infants, 1st and 2nd class starting Wednesday 16th September. This club aims to introduce young children to a healthy and active lifestyle through group activities and circuits which are age appropriate and fun. Children will be collected directly from school, provided with a light snack and drink and collected from the centre after the activity. Afterschool Club Registration for all activities homework club, boys club, and new teen club and stretch and grow will take place on Wed 2nd 1.30 – 4.30 and Thursday 3rd September 9am-12midday.

Binnion Walk: The committee of Ballyduff Community Group Home, Lifford, would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all those who helped make a success of the Fourth Annual Binnion Mass Rock Walk, which took place on Sunday 16th August. A special word of thanks to Tom McKeane, Niall and Grainne Fitzpatrick, Vincent McGrath, Leonard French, Eddie and Marjorie Shiels, Eddie Shiels Jr, Kay Mahon and Robert McFarland, Don Pearson, Gerald Crawford, Alice and Neil Lynch, James Lynch, Patrick Gormley, Joe McKeane and John Doherty. Also a big thank you to all the walkers who turned out on the day, to those who made kind donations and to those who supported our raffle on the weeks leading up to the event. The committee of Ballyduff Community Group home Lifford would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all those who helped make a success of the walk, which took place on the 16th August. The amount raised was an incredible €2142!

Disabled Drivers: The Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland provides nationwide support to drivers with disabilities and their families and carers. History Group: Taughboyne History Group is currently taking a break for the summer. Our next meeting will be Wednesday 9 September 2015 in the Resource Centre. Time will be 7.30 pm. New members and participants are welcome. From then on we will meet every second and fourth Wednesday evening of the month. If you feel you can help us with our local folklore project or have information on how any local placenames were derived we would be delighted to hear from you. Silver Circle: St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre is holding a five week silver circle. Weekly prizes are first prize €60, second €40 and third €20. Promoters prize will be €20. Subscription only €2 weekly or you can pay €10 up front. First draw will be Friday 2 October 2015 and the last draw will be the last Friday in October. For the final draw the prizes will be increased as follows: first prize €100, second €75 and third €50. Promoters prize will be €30. Funds are in aid of the Resource Centre. Walk and Talk: The Saturday walk takes place this Saturday 26 September. The destination is Meentycat Wind Farm Walk, Drumkeen. The walk starts there at 9.30 am so we have to leave the Resource Centre by bus at 8.45 am sharp. Cost €7 per person. Please pack a light snack and bring money for a bite to eat on the way home. Irish Dancing: The Aisling McGill Academy of Irish Dance holds classes weekly in St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre. Tuesdays 5 to 6.30 pm. Thursdays 3.30 to 4.30 pm. Aisling McGill is the tutor and she was six times All Ireland and International Champion and four times Ulster Champion. Please come along and get fit, make friends and learn a rewarding new skill!

Parenting Plus: The Parenting Plus Programme is an eight week programme and will start in Lifford/Clonleigh Resource Centre on Tuesday 6th October 2015. Times 9.30am to 11.45am. An information/registration morning will take place on Monday 28th September at 10am in Lifford/Clonleigh Resource Centre. The Parents Plus Programme offers parents an opportunity to come together in a relaxed and friendly environment to share ideas and learn new techniques to help children be more cooperative, help them learn and reach their full potential, and manage difficult behaviour. If you have children aged 6 to 11yrs old and are interested in finding out more about this programme and/or to book a place contact Deborah at St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre on 91 48551.

Disabled Drivers: The Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland recent collection at St Baithin’s Church, St Johnston raised €112. Thanks everybody.

Vacancy: There will be a vacancy soon on the Murlog Employment Scheme for St Baithin’s Parish, St Johnston. Applicants must be unemployed for at least one year. Harvest Thanksgiving: A harvest thanksgiving service will be held in Killea Parish Church, Church of Ireland, Carrigans on Sunday 27 September at 7.30 pm. Everybody is welcome. The service doubles as a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Church. We don't know when the first Church was built but we know that in 1693 the Church of Ireland Diocese of Derry had a Chapel of Ease near Killea village. The current Church was built in 1765 in Carrigans to replace it. John Oswald was Bishop of Raphoe and William Law was rector when this Church was built. Killea Parish joined the parish of Taughboyne in 1969.

Raffle: Ard Baithin Residents Group held a raffle recently. Large hamper winner sponsored by Mac’s Mace was won by Thomas Kelly. The small hamper was won by Phonsie Browne. Century Cinema Tickets and McDonald’s, Letterkenny, voucher was won by James Wray. Meal voucher for Fisherman’s Inn was won by Mary McClintock. Voucher for Janet’s Hairdresser, Steravage, St Johnston was won by Cate Browne. A gift from Gibson House & Home, Church Lane, St Johnston and a voucher from Ward Family Pharmacy, St Johnston went to Lexie Gilfillan. Congratulations to all the winners. The Residents Group says a huge thanks to all who bought lines for the draw and to the businesses that kindly sponsored prizes. Thanks also to St Johnston and Carrigans FRC which facilitated the draw.

Tractor Run: St Johnston Presbyterian Church will hold a Tractor Run in aid of the Church Renovation Fund. It will take place on Saturday 3 October. €10 per tractor. Leaving the Church Car Park 11 am sharp. All tractors are welcome. All tractors and vehicles must be insured. A vintage display will follow. BBQ featuring John Hamilton’s Organic Produce.

CE Project: St Johnston and Carrigans Community Employment (CE) Project has vacancies for 3 Youth Workers. Two Youth Workers will be based in St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre and the other will be based in Newtowncunningham Youth Centre. Training opportunities are available within budgets. Staff work a 19.5 hour week and are free to take up employment elsewhere for the remainder of the week. These posts are supported by the Department of Social Protection through its Community Development Programme. Christmas Hamper: A raffle for a Luxury Christmas Hamper which is currently on display at the reception in the Resource Centre is now open. Community Carols: The annual Interdenominational Community Carols Service will be held in St Baithin’s Church, St Johnston on Sunday 13 December at 7.30 pm. All welcome.

Walk and Talk: The Walk and Talk Group recently enjoyed the Dunfanaghy walk. The next Saturday walk will this Saturday 12 December. The destination is the Bridle Path, Glenveagh. A shorter walk is available. We leave the Resource Centre by bus at 9 am. Cost €7 per person. Please pack a light snack and bring money for a bite to eat on the way home. If you are under 18 you must be accompanied by an adult. To book call the Resource Centre on 91 48551 or contact Sarah Hunter at the local shop. Everybody is welcome. The group walks on Tuesdays as well, leaving the centre 7.15 pm.

Carols: St Johnston Masonic Hall Committee are having an evening of Lessons and Carols this Friday 11th December 2015 at 7.45pm. Please note that the time was advertised wrongly in previous notes. Venue is the Masonic Hall, Church Lane, St. Johnston. Retiring offering in aid of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of the St Johnston and Carrigans area. Everyone welcome, Supper afterwards.
Wednesday Craft Group: A Wednesday night without our craft group is not the same! We meet to chat, laugh and make things. We meet every Wednesday, 8-10pm, in the centre. New members always welcome.

Lunch Club: The Christmas Lunch Club will take place on Wednesday December 16th starting at 11am in the Resource Centre. Transport can be provided. For more information contact the centre staff at 074-91 48551.

Breastfeeding Group: Bumps and Beyond Breastfeeding Support Group meets every Thursday morning in the Old Playgroup, Church Lane (situated behind St Baithin’s National School, St. Johnston) from 10.30am – 12.30pm. For more info please contact Teresa PHN at 075 9148275 or the Resource Centre office 91 48551. The group is open to new members and offers friendly support and encouragement with tea and coffee.
Parent and Toddler Group: The group meets every Wednesday morning, 10.30am- 12noon, in the Old Playgroup Building Church Lane. This provides toddlers with an opportunity to come together to develop play and social skills. Mean-while parents can get a chat with other parents, enjoy a cup of tea and a bit of craic.

History Group: Taughboyne History Group recently perused a presentation on the early history of Dunmore House, Carrigans until about 1848. The information included the farm and the famous garden. Work continued on the group’s School Folklore Project. Next meeting Wednesday 9th December 2015, 7.30pm in the Resource Centre. New members and inquirers are very welcome.

SVP: The final Christmas Collection for St Johnston and Carrigans Conference of St Baithin St Vincent de Paul will take place this weekend at St Baithin’s Church, St Johnston. The collection will be taken up on the way into the Church before Masses. The funds generated will help local families and others who need assistance during the festive season. The collection at the weekend raised an amazing €456.36. Thanks folks!

Dedication: A Dedication Service for the re-opening of St Johnston Presbyterian Church after its recent refurbishment will be held on Sunday 22nd November at 7.30pm with Rev Jim Stothers, former minister and Deputy Clerk of the General Assembly with the Presbytery Choir. Supper will be served. There will be a collection in aid of refurbishment fund. All very welcome.
