McCann's Bar, Main St, St Johnston later Joe's Bar

Joe Peoples, Kinnically, was the first ever qualified embalmer in Donegal. He was undertaker for three decades. He took his retirement from that in 2004 to concentrate on running a bar popularly known as Joe’s Bar. He was also a Peace Commissioner.

He met Madeleine McCann. Not long before she vanished in 2007, she had been in the town with her parents, Gerry and Kate.

They visited Joe’s Bar on the Main Street, formerly McCann’s bar. The reason was the owner of the bar was Eileen McCann from whom Joe leased the pub. Eileen who passed away in 2020 showing possible signs of suffering Covid 19 was Gerry McCann’s mother. She was 80.

Joe said in the aftermath of the disappearance of Madeleine, “She was just running around all over the bar having a great time, up to all sorts.”

Joe had been in ill health in later years and suffered a fall. He died in his home Kinnycally near St Johnston on Monday night June 15 2020.
